Siena Capital Group, LLC has announced that it has appointed Mathys Baldacchino as Director of Research and Development, as the firm continues to expand its leadership team since its establishment earlier this year.

Founded in April by Luke Meehan (General Partner) and Jack Stone (Partner), Siena Capital Group operates as a private investment office with a focus on special situations including catastrophe bonds and insurance-linked securities (ILS).

Baldacchino joins the organisation from Bernina Re Ltd., where he served as the firm’s Catastrophe Modeling Lead.

Before he joined Bernina Re, Baldacchino worked at AXA Investment Managers (AXA IM), where he served as an insurance-linked securities (ILS) Investment Analyst.

Additionally, Baldacchino is the founder of Catmosphere, an independent research project which aims to predict the occurrences of natural phenomena, including catastrophes, by utilising publicly available data and the latest computing technology.

In his new role, Baldacchino will be expected to lead all scientific Research & Development at Siena Capital, as well as its portfolio companies, with an initial special focus on Caterina Technologies, Inc. Siena Capital’s ILS fintech platform-as-a-service, which is slated for launch in Q4 2025.

Moreover, Caterina, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Siena Capital is the world’s first fintech company dedicated to serving the ILS market and its participants.

Baldacchino’s appointment shortly follows the hiring of Ridwan Bari, who joined Siena Capital last month as the firm’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), to spearhead technology strategy across the organisation’s portfolio companies.

Addressing his new role, Baldacchino said: “I’m thrilled to join Siena Capital as Director of Research & Development. From our very first conversations it was clear that we share a deep commitment to open source principles and to building transparent, truly understandable models. Siena Capital’s vision of delivering accessible, open solutions is its greatest strength, and I look forward to advancing that mission together.

“In this role I will draw on my experience in applied research, data science, and product innovation to create robust tools for monitoring natural catastrophes—work that will help our partners make faster, better informed decisions.”

Jack Stone, Partner of Siena Capital Group, commented: “When we first met Mathys, we knew he would be a perfect fit for Siena Capital’s culture, which is simultaneously philosophical, scientific, and commercial. In appointing Mathys as Head of R&D, we have once again demonstrated our commitment to identifying and hiring the best and brightest talent within the industries that we choose to serve.”

Ridwan Bari, Chief Technology Officer of Siena Capital, added: “I’m truly impressed by the depth and breadth of expertise Mathys brings to the team. Equally inspiring is the leadership’s commitment to building products and services rooted in cutting-edge R&D. Mathys’s addition is a game-changer for our global team.”
